Carricante Nonna Amelia is a white wine produced by Azienda Agricola Siciliano, the Etna estate of Rocco Siciliano, located in Castiglione di Sicilia on the north slope of Mount Etna at approximately 700 meters elevation. Alessandro Viola joined as consulting winemaker beginning with the 2015 vintage, bringing his low-intervention approach to the estate's fruit. The wine is classified as Terre Siciliane IGT, a designation common for high-elevation north Etna vineyards whose altitude can exceed the Etna DOC ceiling.
Carricante is an ancient Sicilian white grape variety that has grown on Etna's volcanic slopes for at least a thousand years. The variety is defined by high natural acidity and moderate yields when managed carefully. In Castiglione di Sicilia, vines sit in fine-grained volcanic soils with strong diurnal temperature swings that slow ripening and preserve acidity through harvest.
Vinification follows a minimal-intervention approach: all processes are carried out by hand, fermentation is initiated with indigenous yeasts (pied de cuve), no controlled temperatures, and sulfites are added only in small amounts based on the vintage, or not at all. The wine is unfiltered and unfined.
On the palate Carricante from this north Etna site delivers bright citrus and white peach character, a saline mineral backbone, and herbal lift. High acidity keeps the wine focused and food-friendly.
