Ardbeg has spent decades building a reputation around bold, uncompromising peat, and Trudernish marks a genuine milestone in that story: the distillery's first-ever permanent 15-year-old single malt to join the core range. The name comes from an ancient settlement on Islay's "Enchanted Cape," tied to local legend — the pure water of the well at Trudernish, notoriously difficult to find, is said to never freeze, even through Islay's harshest winters. Ardbeg's own team frames the whisky as a kind of quest, transporting drinkers to Islay to reveal "delicious, creamy flavours hidden beneath its smoky exterior."

Created by Dr. Bill Lumsden, Ardbeg's Director of Whisky Creation, alongside Master Blender Gillian Macdonald, Trudernish matures a full 15 years across ex-bourbon, new charred oak, and Oloroso sherry casks — a genuinely considered three-cask approach built specifically to soften Ardbeg's signature smoke into something rounder and creamier without ever losing the distillery's core identity. As Ardbeg's own team puts it, "ex-bourbon casks typically bring notes of vanilla, coconut, yellow fruit and cereal sweetness. Charred new oak, when used with precision, can heighten the spicy impression, structure and certain toasted nuances. Oloroso, meanwhile, adds a darker, more enveloping dimension, with echoes of nuts, cocoa, spices and ripe fruit." Distillery Manager Bryony McNiven called it "the perfect dram" to introduce Ardbeg's new visual identity, rolling out globally across the whole core range this autumn.

The whisky has already earned a genuine Double Gold Medal at the 2026 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, ahead of its official release. David Tao's early tasting for Forbes found "Ardbeg's classic smoky nose with nutty Oloroso and dried fruits, evolving into a palate of sweet, herbal, and peaty notes balanced by mocha," concluding it's "a strong contender" and "a welcome bridge within Ardbeg's age-stated offerings." Whisky For Everyone's tasting found the color "bright gold," the nose "sweet, punchy and smoky," with "early aromas of golden syrup and vanilla pod" quickly joined "by some fragrant heather honey and caramelised apricot," underpinned by "a distinct malty aroma" and "ashy peat smoke." WhiskyIntelligence's coverage found the palate "creamy and full-bodied, with bold Ardbeg peat merging into a smooth wave of sweet vanilla cream," classic notes of "soft pine, woodsmoke and damp forest floor" leading "into dark liquorice, chocolate lime, and a touch of herbal mint," with "more soft orchard fruits and floral sweetness," finishing on "peat, dark liquorice and nuts wrapped in milk chocolate and a long smoky finish," with "a silky thread of vanilla" running throughout — the reviewer concluding: "I guarantee this whisky's take on Ardbeg's peaty paradox will charm smoky malt lovers everywhere." This is a genuinely significant new addition to one of Islay's most beloved distilleries — arriving with real critical momentum behind it.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Ardbeg Trudernish 15 Years Old is produced at Ardbeg Distillery on Islay, Scotland, founded in 1815 by John MacDougall, with records showing distillation on the site dating back as far as 1794. Created by Dr. Bill Lumsden, Director of Whisky Creation, and Gillian Macdonald, Master Blender, Trudernish marks the distillery's first-ever permanent 15-year-old single malt, part of a broader visual refresh being rolled out across Ardbeg's entire core range this autumn.

The whisky matures 15 years across ex-bourbon casks, new charred oak, and Oloroso sherry casks — a three-cask approach designed to build creamy, rounded sweetness beneath Ardbeg's signature smoky character. The whisky is bottled non-chill filtered, in natural colour, at 48.8% ABV. Trudernish has already earned a Double Gold Medal at the 2026 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Critics Reviews

Double Gold Medal — San Francisco World Spirits Competition, 2026

David Tao, Forbes:
"The whisky presents Ardbeg's classic smoky nose with nutty Oloroso and dried fruits, evolving into a palate of sweet, herbal, and peaty notes balanced by mocha. Experts commend its quality, value, and satisfying finish, positioning it as a strong contender and a welcome bridge within Ardbeg's age-stated offerings."

Whisky For Everyone (extended independent review):
"The colour is bright gold and the nose is sweet, punchy and smoky. Early aromas of golden syrup and vanilla pod are quickly joined by some fragrant heather honey and caramelised apricot. A distinct malty aroma underpins everything, as does ashy peat smoke."

(extended review):
"Taste: Creamy and full-bodied, with bold Ardbeg peat merging into a smooth wave of sweet vanilla cream. Classic notes of soft pine, woodsmoke and damp forest floor lead into dark liquorice, chocolate lime, and a touch of herbal mint. More soft orchard fruits and floral sweetness are paired with tastes of peat, dark liquorice and nuts wrapped in milk chocolate and a long smoky finish. A silky thread of vanilla runs throughout. I guarantee this whisky's take on Ardbeg's peaty paradox will charm smoky malt lovers everywhere."

Ardbeg (official tasting notes):
"Nose: Earthy peat, gentle wood smoke, and a creamy sweetness likened to melted vanilla ice cream with fudge sauce, with pine, fruit, and floral notes behind."
