From the Maximilian Foulkes collection of exceptional vintage objects, this remarkable antique cigar case dates to 1903 and was crafted by A. Barrett & Sons, the historic London luxury goods retailer and silversmith. Constructed from beautifully aged leather with sterling silver detailing, the case offers a fascinating glimpse into the tradition of personalized smoking accessories.
Originally presented as a Christmas gift in 1905, the case features a thoughtful inscription formed from individual pieces of sterling silver and applied directly to the leather exterior. The silver mounting bears Birmingham hallmarks for 1903, while the reverse is hand engraved “W. Gale. Waltham Melton-Mowbray,” identifying its original recipient. The leather has developed a rich natural patina over more than a century, preserving the character and history of this unique piece.
Designed in the traditional sleeve within sleeve style, the case accommodates cigars of varying lengths and is particularly suited to slender Panatela cigars of approximately 36 ring gauge or smaller. Its adjustable construction provides practical protection while retaining the elegance of its original design.
