Amaro Montenegro has been made in Bologna, Italy, since 1885. Herbalist and distiller Stanislao Cobianchi created it. He first called it Elisir Lungavita, the elixir of long life. He named it after Princess Elena of Montenegro, who married the future King Victor Emmanuel III. It is still produced near Bologna, in San Lazzaro di Savena.
The secret recipe uses 40 botanicals. Sweet and bitter orange peel, nutmeg and liquorice root are among them. Cinnamon, clove, coriander, oregano and marjoram join in too. At 23% ABV, it is lighter and sweeter than many Italian amari. In the glass it shows a clear golden amber.
The nose is bright with orange and mandarin, plus soft herbal and floral hints. On the palate it starts sweet, then turns gently bitter. Orange zest leads, with a little spice from clove. The finish is mildly bitter and citrusy, with a light floral touch some compare to rose.
