Introduction
Alzinger Grüner Veltliner Loibenberg Smaragd originates from Austria, within the Niederösterreich region and the Wachau subregion. Weingut Alzinger is a family winery located in Unterloiben that stopped selling its grapes to make its own wines when Leo Alzinger took over in 1970. Working alongside his son, Leo Junior, the family maintains a winemaking philosophy focused on honest, open craftsmanship that calmly reflects the distinct root structures and terroir of the valley.
Wine Description
This white wine presents a bright, light yellow colour and possesses a full, concentrated body that remains remarkably sleek and cool. The sensory profile is highly expressive and multi-layered, featuring an aromatic nose of dried herbs, sliced pears, chopped apples, and yellow kiwi, laced with white pepper and a gentle yeasty creaminess. On the palate, it is smooth, flowing, and elegant, delivering flavours of stone fruit, grapefruit, and fennel supported by an exquisite tension, precise tannins, and a striking, lively acidity. The finish is exceptionally long, textured, and firm, culminating in a dry, savory exit marked by dark minerality, fern, and white miso.
Varietal Composition: 100% Grüner Veltliner.
Stylistic Notes: The wine is celebrated for its incredible structural focus and purity, avoiding any oak barrel maturation to maximize the natural freshness and gripping, transparent minerality of the fruit.
ABV: 13.5%.
Organic Status: While the estate emphasizes traditional manual agriculture and careful land stewardship, this bottling is not certified organic.
Food Pairing
The vibrant acidity, dry structure, and deep savory components of this Smaragd make it a well-balanced partner for a wide array of food pairings.
Seafood: Pairs beautifully with a selection of seafood, raw oysters, and delicate white fish preparations.
Meats: Complements roasted white meats, such as herb-seasoned pork or poultry.
Savoury: Suggested pairings include traditional rice dishes, rich vegetable terrines, and fresh legumes.
Salads: Matches excellently with crisp summer salads that welcome the wine's herbaceous undertones.
