Scona Gold is the legendary flagship Kölsch-style Ale from Edmonton’s Alley Kat Brewing Company. As one of the oldest craft breweries in Alberta (founded in 1995), Alley Kat created this beer as a tribute to the Strathcona neighborhood. It is one of the most decorated beers in Canadian history, having won multiple Gold medals at the Canadian Brewing Awards. It is designed to be the ultimate "crossover" beer offering the delicate complexity of an ale with the clean, refreshing finish of a lager.
Beer Description
Scona Gold pours a brilliant, crystal-clear deep gold with a frothy white head and fine, persistent carbonation.
Aroma: The nose is clean, subtle, and inviting. It leads with the scent of honeyed cereal grain and toasted biscuits, followed by a very faint, characteristic fruitiness think ripe pear or white grape which is a hallmark of the Kölsch yeast. There is a soft, herbal hop presence that keeps the bouquet balanced.
Palate: On the tongue, it is light-to-medium bodied with a smooth, "round" mouthfeel. It leads with a gentle malt sweetness, which is quickly met by a mild, flowery bitterness. The finish is remarkably crisp and "short," meaning it cleans up off the palate quickly, leaving a faint, pleasant graininess.
Profile: It sits at a highly sessionable 5.0% ABV and a low bitterness of 20 IBU, making it an exceptionally balanced "all-day" ale.
Technical Notes: Scona Gold is a hybrid style. It is fermented with a specific Kölsch ale yeast at cooler temperatures, then "lagered" (cold-conditioned) for several weeks. This process suppresses the heavy fruit notes of an ale while maintaining a soft, delicate ester profile. It is brewed using premium two-row malted barley and traditional German Noble hops, ensuring an authentic European character with an Alberta soul.
