Akkeshi’s "Shoman" 2023 release completely shatters conventional blending boundaries. Operating out of Japan’s northernmost island, the Hokkaido-based distillery pays homage to the 24 solar terms, with this eleventh edition capturing the rampant vitality of early summer. It is an absolute triumph. They wove their heavily peated local malt together with sourced grain whiskies, creating an intricate tapestry of terroir and technique. You get this phenomenal clash between bright, sun-baked sweetness and rugged coastal smoke, proving that their meticulous cask curation can completely redefine a spirit's traditional trajectory. The execution hits every single mark.
Maturation for this release is an unapologetically complex affair. The blending team didn't just lean on rum barrels; they masterfully integrated ex-bourbon, sherry, and European wine casks before finally resting the liquid in prized Japanese Mizunara oak. That combination alone guarantees a wildly unpredictable tasting experience. Tropical esters collide head-on with earthy incense. This isn't your standard delicate Japanese dram. It practically demands immediate attention. The interplay between the caramelized sugars and the damp, maritime peat creates a tension that is incredibly satisfying to pull apart.
- Matured in rum, sherry, wine, ex-bourbon, and Mizunara oak casks
- Eleventh release in the celebrated 24 Sekki series
- Bottled at a robust 96 proof
