33 Acres of Darkness is a multi-award-winning Schwarzbier (Black Lager) from Vancouver’s 33 Acres Brewing Co. This beer is a masterclass in contradiction: it looks like a heavy stout but drinks with the clean, refreshing "snap" of a crisp lager. It has become one of the most respected dark beers in Canada, famously winning World’s Best Schwarzbier at the World Beer Awards. It’s designed for those who love the flavors of dark chocolate and coffee but want a beer that is light enough for a summer evening.
Beer Description
This Schwarzbier pours a deep, dark mahogany—appearing nearly black in the glass—but reveals brilliant garnet highlights when held to the light. It is topped with a dense, creamy, tan-colored head.
Aroma: The nose is sophisticated and inviting. It leads with dominant notes of baker’s chocolate and roasted nuts, followed by a subtle scent of cold-brew coffee. Unlike a porter, it remains very "clean" on the nose, with a faint herbal hop presence and no heavy fruity esters.
Palate: On the tongue, it is light-to-medium bodied and remarkably smooth. It leads with a delicate sweetness of toasted crust and dark cocoa, which quickly transitions into a dry, roasted finish. Because it is a lager, the mouthfeel is crisp and effervescent rather than thick or syrupy.
Profile: It has a highly sessionable ABV of 5.0% and a moderate bitterness of 30 IBU, providing a perfect balance between roasted depth and lager-like refreshment.
Technical Notes: Brewed using a blend of roasted specialty malts and traditional German noble hops. The key to its award-winning profile is the bottom-fermentation process and an extended cold-lagering period. This ensures that the roasted barley flavors are smoothed out, removing any harsh or "burnt" astringency often found in dark ales.
